A Mother’s Anguish
It all began when a worried mother couldn’t find her daughter, who also worked at Walmart. The panic grew as she searched frantically for over an hour, only to make a chilling discovery. Imagine the horror she must have felt when she opened the oven door and found her beloved daughter’s charred remains.
The news of this devastating loss left everyone involved in utter disbelief. A Walmart spokesperson expressed their deep sympathies, saying, “Our focus remains on taking care of our associates and making sure they have the support they need.”

The young woman, identified as Gursimran Kaur, had immigrated to Canada from India with big dreams. She had been working at Walmart alongside her mother for two years. Both mother and daughter were active members of the Sikh community in Halifax, regularly attending their local gurdwara, a place of worship.
Satnam Singh Randhawa, chair of the Maritime Sikh Society board, shared his distress, saying, “It’s pretty distressing, you know, young people come here with all kinds of hopes and dreams, and they’re working hard, and then this is what happens.”

In the wake of this tragic event, the community has rallied together to support Gursimran’s grieving family. The mother, who is understandably traumatized, has received an outpouring of love and compassion from those around her.
The Sikh Society has organized fundraising efforts to help the family during this unimaginably difficult time. A GoFundMe campaign has raised an incredible amount of nearly $193,000 CAD, surpassing its target. The goal now is to arrange for Gursimran’s father and her 10-year-old brother, who remain in India, to fly to Canada and be with their family.
