All natural fruits and vegetables are great for you, but did you know that certain ones shouldn’t be mixed together? For example, cucumbers and tomatoes.
Cucumbers and tomatoes are incredibly healthy. They are full of water, antioxidants, nutrients, and vitamins. However, they should not be eaten together! According to Ayurveda, it’s important to understand the digestion time of each ingredient when crafting a salad.
Combining vegetables that have different digestion times can be problematic. The lighter ingredient may pass through your intestine just as the other starts digesting, leading to food fermentation in your stomach. This can result in toxins, slow digestion, and fermentation of sugars and starches. Not only will this spoil your meal, but it can also cause gas, bloating, and stomach ache.
There are other food combinations, aside from cucumbers and tomatoes, that you should be cautious about. Here are a few to remember:
Fruits after a meal: Fruits take longer to digest and staying in the stomach for too long can lead to acid reflux and other digestion issues.
Meat and cheese: Don’t overload your meal with proteins. Stick to one type per meal.
Macaroni and cheese (or macaroni and meat): Though popular, this mixture can lead to digestive issues because starches and proteins have different digestion times.
Veggies and cheese: Combining them can increase the risk of bloating.
Bread or noodles with orange juice: The acid in orange juice can destroy the enzyme needed to digest starch.
Melon and watermelon: These fruits should be eaten individually, not combined with other fruits.
Bananas and milk: This combination can slow down digestion.
Fruits and yogurt: Popular for breakfast, but it can slow down digestion and affect your intestinal flora.
