On October 1, Jimmy Carter reached an extraordinary milestone by celebrating his 100th birthday, making him the first American president to live a full century. While this occasion is filled with celebration, Carter’s grandson acknowledges that he is in the ‘very limited’ phase of life, embarking on a ‘journey’ that comes only at the ‘very end’.
In memory of this remarkable day, family and friends gathered in Plains, Georgia, to honor Carter’s century of life. This gathering was especially significant as it marked his first birthday without his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn.
President Joe Biden conveyed a heartfelt birthday message to Carter. He reflected, ‘We understand this is your first birthday without Rosalynn. Although it is bittersweet, she’s in your heart, always with you in spirit.’
Rosalynn Carter, who also hailed from Plains, passed away on November 19 at the age of 96. Jimmy Carter, who is now wheelchair-bound, rarely makes public appearances but was present at his wife’s memorial service.
The bond between Carter and Biden spans decades, with Biden being one of the early supporters of Carter’s 1976 presidential campaign. Biden described Carter’s post-presidency life as an embodiment of moral clarity through initiatives like the Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity. ‘Mr. President, I admire you tremendously,’ Biden said.
The celebration took place at the home Carter has cherished for years, built alongside Rosalynn in the 1960s. His grandson, Jason, shared with Southern Living that this cherished place provides Carter with the comfort and support he needs in these later years.
Jason, a lawyer and politician, expressed the peace that his grandfather finds in Plains, highlighting it as the only place where Carter would feel truly at home.
In a conversation with Southern Living, Jason acknowledged that his grandfather has faced challenges since Rosalynn’s passing. ‘After 77 years of marriage, it’s difficult to grasp his experience now. We must recognize the spiritual depth that’s beyond our understanding.’
The Associated Press noted that the celebration included Carter’s son, Chip, among the many who gathered. The event featured cupcakes on the lawn and antique World War II planes soaring overhead in his honor, while attendees later tuned into the vice-presidential debate on TV.
Chip revealed his father’s aspiration to remain alive to cast his vote in the upcoming election, expressing hope to see Kamala Harris’s name on the ballot.
Jason, who chairs the Carter Center, expressed admiration for his grandfather’s legacy. ‘Not everyone is blessed with 100 years, and when someone does so much good, it’s truly a time to celebrate.’
Reflecting on Carter’s time in hospice, Jason shared, ‘These past 19 months have given both our family and the world an opportunity to reflect on his impactful life. It’s been deeply gratifying.’
‘Physically Limited, Spiritually Engaged’
Speaking to People Magazine, Jason provided insight into Carter’s current condition. ‘His physical ability is greatly limited, but he remains emotionally engaged, experiencing joy and love.’
Jason described this period as a profound stage of Carter’s journey, one unique to the end of life. He has found this time to be meaningful for his grandfather. Celebrate Jimmy Carter’s remarkable life by sharing your birthday wishes below and spreading the word to others who can do the same!
