We are deeply saddened to share the news of a tragic accident that took the life of Angela Chao, CEO of Foremost Group, a prominent private shipping company. Angela, the sister of Elaine Chao, former US Transportation Secretary, was a leader in the maritime industry and an inspiration to many. Her passing leaves a void that will be felt by all who knew her.
Despite this tragedy, Angela’s legacy will live on through her significant contributions to the industry. Her family’s shipping company, Foremost Group, acknowledged Angela’s dedication to the welfare of their crews and her integral role in shaping the company’s services. She was a true pioneer in the maritime industry and a cherished friend of the US Coast Guard Academy, where her grace, compassion, and leadership qualities will be remembered fondly.
Angela’s educational background was exceptional, having attended both Harvard College and Harvard Business School. After gaining experience at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, she assumed the role of CEO at her father’s business in 2018. Her vision and charisma propelled Foremost Group forward, making it a noteworthy player in the shipping industry.
Angela’s passing has left a profound impact on her family. Her 96-year-old father, James SC Chao, shared heartfelt words about his brilliant daughter, remembering her infectious laughter and constant smile. Angela firmly believed in the importance of family, friendship, and helping others, and her name, which has meanings related to peace and wealth in Chinese characters, is a testament to this.
Elaine Chao, Angela’s sister, is widely known for her own achievements, having held positions as the secretary of labor under George W. Bush and the secretary of transportation under Trump. She is married to Mitch McConnell, the minority leader in the Senate, and they have been together since 1993. Before her role as CEO at Foremost Group, Angela had served on the boards of esteemed organizations such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Bank of China.
Angela Chao’s philanthropic efforts and leadership have garnered widespread respect and admiration, particularly in her support for the arts. Her commitment to family and giving back to society was unwavering, and her Harvard Business College profile exemplifies this philosophy. Angela’s father, husband, and four sisters will forever carry her memory in their hearts.
We extend our deepest condolences to the Chao family during this immensely difficult time. Angela’s loss is felt not only within her family but also within the shipping industry, where her bright spirit and remarkable achievements will always be remembered. Foremost Group, the company she diligently led, will continue to flourish, guided by Angela’s indelible impact.
