For Hugh Jackman, getting his body back in superhero shape was easier in some ways than others.
Ryan Reynolds, 47, mentioned he “couldn’t believe” the physicality he witnessed from Jackman.
“The sheer relentlessness you dedicated towards stunts and choreography was amazing. It was the first time I’d ever seen how invaluable a background in song and dance is for action movies,” he shared. “You hit your marks in those fight scenes with speed and confidence like I’ve never seen before. It didn’t matter if you were 25, 35, 45 or 55. It was lightning.”
Watching you do what just looked like a clinic on stunt work was one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen in my life,” Reynolds added, followed by Jackman thanking him for the kind words.
Jackman admits that much of that physical dexterity came from working with stunt coordinator Brian Smrz, who introduced him to the idea of incorporating dance training into action sequences.
He ended up loving the process and integrating dance into his stunts, even as he’s getting older.
“When I came back to it, it was really fun and I was thrilled. My body felt a little sore initially, but I was thrilled to see it still responding. And I realized how good it is for your brain. But the hardest bit…the food,” Jackman confessed, noting that bulking up for Wolverine has always been a challenge.
“I have to eat a lot,” he continued. “For me, with my naturally skinny body type, putting on size is the hardest part. It drives me crazy.”
Reynolds concurred, “Yeah, the five or six meals a day might sound great to some people. But it’s not like the type of food you’d really enjoy.”
Reynolds then joked that despite their 17-year friendship, seeing Jackman’s athleticism on set was both impressive and intimidating.
“I noticed in the film that we’d quickly change things and say, ‘Okay, let’s try this and that.’ Especially the physicality — your dance background really came through because you’d do things where I was convinced you were going to hit me a few times,” he said with a laugh. “I thought, ‘There’s no way this guy’s pulling his punch.’ I even joked I’d be decapitated by Hugh Jackman.”
“When Hugh Jackman is coming at you at 150 Australian miles per hour, you feel like there’s no way you’re not going to be dead in four seconds,” Reynolds quips. “Thank goodness for the mask, because underneath it, my face said, ‘Oh God!’
