Martha Stewart is a beloved personality, famous for her lifestyle inspirations and culinary expertise, with admirers worldwide.
Recently, however, she has been at the center of a controversy due to a social media post from her trip to Greenland, which many have labeled “tone-deaf”.
Stewart, 82, was widely celebrated in May for her feature in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. Yet, her latest Instagram snapshot didn’t receive the same warm reception.
On August 29, Martha shared images from a cruise along Greenland’s east coast. One picture shows her sipping a cocktail and came with a caption that reads:
“End of the first zodiac cruise from @swanhelleniccruises into a very beautiful fjord on the east coast of Greenland. We actually captured a small iceberg for our cocktails tonight.”
While Stewart’s post seemed innocuous enough, it swiftly sparked backlash from followers who found her use of the “small iceberg” in her drink distasteful.
Comments soon flooded in, many criticizing her mention of the iceberg amidst concerns about melting ice caps.
“Martha, the ice caps are melting; please don’t put them in your drink,” wrote one Instagram user.
Another commented: “I usually appreciate Martha and her lifestyle focused on beautiful gardens, homes, and food. However, the image of wealthy individuals using iceberg ice for cocktails while our planet suffers is quite tone-deaf.”
“It’s like a scene from a dystopian story. Billionaires enjoying cocktails with glacier ice as the world burns sounds unreal,” another follower remarked.
“In the face of global warming, using glacier ice for drinks feels tone-deaf. I’ve enjoyed Martha’s work for years, but the extravagance is too much as many struggle to afford essentials,” added another.
Earlier in the year, Martha took the spotlight when she proudly posed in swimsuits for the Sports Illustrated cover. At 81, she shared the commitment needed to prepare for her photo shoot.
“I didn’t starve myself, but I avoided bread and pasta for several months,” Martha explained on the Today show.
“I committed to Pilates every other day, a habit I’ve continued because it’s truly beneficial. I maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and attentive skincare.”
During an influential event in Las Vegas, Martha shared feedback she received on her “authentic” cover photo.
“The positive responses were uplifting,” Martha said. “It showed women of all ages that if I can do it, they can too.”
