Being in a shelter for an extended period can really wear a dog down. Many shelters witness previously happy and hopeful dogs lose their vigor after months of waiting for a forever home.
This is precisely what has happened to one Indiana shelter dog named Major, who, after over 260 days, continues to “cry endlessly” following his rejection by his former family. Despite his sorrow, his friends at the shelter still believe a perfect family is out there for him.
Major is a loving 4-year-old terrier/pitbull mix currently under the care of the Humane Society for Hamilton County in Indiana.
Major found himself at the shelter as a stray last summer. The humane society discovered he had a microchip, allowing them to contact his original owners, who promised to pick him up but never did.
Since then, Major has stayed at the shelter. Initially, despite the painful rejection, Major was still in good spirits. The staff described him as a “sweet and sensitive” dog with a “big heart,” who loves to play, especially with his favorite Jolly Ball.
The shelter staff nicknamed him “Major hunk” and “Major heartthrob” because of his endearing nature. Sadly, these qualities were not enough to attract a loving home: months passed, and Major was continually overlooked by potential adopters.
This continuous rejection has taken a toll on Major’s cheerful demeanor.
“His spunky personality is dimming,” the humane society shared on Facebook. “This once jolly ball-loving boy now sits in his room and cries endlessly.”
To alleviate his stress, the shelter has moved him out of the kennels and into a visiting room. However, they know that the only real solution is for Major to find a permanent home.
Ideal for a home without young children or cats, Major can get along with other dogs. However, given his strength, a meet-and-greet is recommended to ensure compatibility.
Though not every household will be a perfect match for Major, there must be a family out there that is just right for this sweet and playful dog. “If you’re ready to welcome a loving, strong, and playful friend into your life, Major is the one for you!” his adoption page declares.
If you are in the area and interested in adopting Major, you can fill out an application on his adoption page and visit the Humane Society of Hamilton County to meet him.
It’s heartbreaking to see Major so depressed after such a lengthy stay at the shelter. We hope he finds his new home very soon! Please share this story to help spread the word about this beautiful dog! ❤️
