In today’s world, it’s increasingly common for the relevance or suitability of things to be questioned. This open dialogue is beneficial, as it encourages discussions about topics that might not have been widely addressed in the past.
The topic of gender roles is one such discussion that’s constantly evolving. While we’re better than ever before at leveling the playing field for all regarding equality, there remains room for improvement in providing equal opportunities and ensuring we treat one another fairly.
Not so long ago, however, gender roles were much more rigid. There were activities deemed inappropriate for women, just as there were roles a man would avoid to escape ridicule.
Fortunately, progress is being made, and as a society, we’re working to confront these outdated notions each year. Nowadays, many of us are mindful of these issues, and if proof is needed, consider a seemingly innocuous picture that recently went viral, provoking widespread comment.
How many of us, if we’re honest, thought all doctors were men and all nurses women when we were children? I’m not embarrassed to admit that as a child, I imagined doctors as male and anticipated a female face when visiting a nurse.
Historically, that was indeed the norm, with few exceptions. However, the medical industry has evolved, and today, you’re just as likely to encounter a male or female doctor or nurse.
Therefore, when a picture posted on a platform called X showed two children dressed as doctor and nurse, it sparked considerable controversy. In this image, a boy is clad in a green uniform with “Doctor In Training” printed on his back, while holding hands with a girl in a pink uniform labeled “Nurse In Training”.
Surely just a harmless game, right? While the poster likely perceived it as such, many viewers voiced strong opinions otherwise.
Numerous comments criticized the image, arguing that it perpetuates harmful stereotypes. The critique extended beyond just the words on the children’s backs to include the color of the uniforms they wore.
In today’s reality, both male and female professionals fill roles as doctors and nurses. Thus, suggesting women are inclined to nursing while men are destined for doctoring can be seen as inappropriate by some.
In my view, it’s just an innocent picture intended to amuse, and perhaps it’s best not to take everything so seriously before reacting online. Nevertheless, everyone is entitled to their opinions, and given the strong reaction this image prompted, it isn’t my place to belittle those responses.
