However, it is with a heavy heart that we share the sad news of the passing of Christo Jivkov, one of the lead actors in the “Passion” film. Jivkov, who portrayed Jesus’ disciple, the apostle John, tragically lost his life at the age of 48 due to lung cancer.
Jivkov co-founded the independent production company Red Carpet Films. The company’s Facebook page shared the devastating news, expressing their deep sorrow: “Today we lost our beloved friend and dear colleague Christo Jivkov, co-founder of ‘Red Carpet.’ We are truly devastated by this untimely loss. We will never forget you!”
Jivkov was scheduled to reprise his role as John in the sequel to the “Passion” movie, titled “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection.” The sequel, currently in pre-production, will again be written and directed by Mel Gibson, with Jim Caviezel reprising his remarkable portrayal of Jesus.
Upon learning of Jivkov’s passing, Gibson spoke fondly of his colleague, saying, “My dear friend Christo has lost his heroic battle with cancer. Right to the last moment, he was filled with hope and his spirit remained strong. I will miss him, but I take solace in knowing that his suffering is over, and he has found eternal bliss. May God keep him.”
Gibson confirmed earlier his plans for the sequel to “Passion.” In 2022, he mentioned having “two scripts” for the potential film, adding that both were excellent. However, he was diligently working to ensure the story would deeply resonate with those who may not be familiar with the core narrative. The sequel aims to portray the events that unfolded between Good Friday, when Jesus was crucified, and Easter, the day of his resurrection.
Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1975, Jivkov made a significant impact beyond his role in “Passion.” He was also known for his performances in films like “The Profession of Arms” and “In Memory of Me.”
