It is with great sadness that we report the sudden passing of Maurice Williams, the lead singer of the renowned band Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. Maurice, whose hit song “Stay” became an iconic part of the 80s, passed away at the age of 86. As we mourn his loss, let’s remember the incredible contributions he made to the music industry.
A Musical Journey
Born in Lancaster, South Carolina, Maurice Williams discovered his love for music at a young age. In his teens, he formed his first band called The Royal Charms, and they soon released their first big hit, “Little Darlin,” in 1957. The group was initially known as The Diamonds before Maurice changed the name to Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs in 1959.
The Everlasting Hit: “Stay”
In 1960, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs released their doo-wop classic, “Stay In.” This song went on to become a sensation, reaching the top spot on the Billboard singles chart. The unique charm of “Stay” led it to be recognized as the shortest-ever No. 1 song. With its release under Herald Records, the band gained widespread recognition, including in New York City.
Maurice’s Musical Vision
Reflecting on the success of “Stay,” Maurice shared his thoughts in an interview. He spoke about the band’s early struggles and how the song changed their fortunes. Maurice originally sang the falsetto part of the song but felt the need for a stronger voice. Upon hearing Shane Gaston sing in Charlotte, Maurice invited him to join the group, taking the falsetto to new heights.
Legacy and Recognition
Besides their chart-topping hit, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs had several other notable songs, including “I Remember,” “May I,” “Come Along,” and “Being Without You.” Maurice’s talent and dedication paved the way for a successful career that spanned over six decades. In 2007, he was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, followed by his inclusion in the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame a few years later.
Celebrating an R&B Pioneer
Maurice Williams leaves behind a rich musical legacy and memories that will always remain in our hearts. His contribution to rhythm and blues made him a true pioneer of the genre. As we remember Maurice’s remarkable journey, let’s cherish the music he gifted the world and forever celebrate his impact on the industry.
Rest in peace, Maurice Williams. Thank you for the music.
