When you go to the beach and see a spot with no waves, don’t come closer.
This could be a rip current, a hidden danger that can occur unexpectedly along the coast. These areas look different—they often have a darker color because the water there is deeper, and the surface appears calmer with smaller waves.
Once you step into a rip current, it can pull you out into the open sea very quickly—so fast that even an Olympic swimmer would struggle to swim back. This is actually the cause of around 80% of drowning incidents at sea.
If you ever find yourself caught in a rip current, remember to stay calm. Instead of swimming directly towards the shore, swim sideways, parallel to the coastline, to escape the current’s pull.
