Hearts are heavy for Michelle Obama following her recent announcement.
On May 31, Michelle took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share the sad news that her beloved mom Marian Robinson had passed away at the age of 86.
โMy mom Marian Robinson was my rock, always there for whatever I needed,โ Michelle wrote on X. โShe was the same steady backstop for our entire family, and we are heartbroken to share she passed away today.โ
Michelle concluded her personal statement by saying, โWe wanted to offer some reflections on her remarkable lifeโ before sharing a link to her familyโs joint statement.
In the statement, the family shared that Robinson โhad a way of summing up the truths about life in a word or two, maybe a quick phrase that made everyone around her stop and think.โ They shared a few of Robinsonโs favorites, including:
โDonโt sweat the small stuff.โ
โKnow whatโs truly precious.โ
โAs a parent, youโre not raising babies โ youโre raising little people.โ
โDonโt worry about whether anybody else likes you. Come home. Weโll always like you here.โ
The statement also described their time in the White House and the important role Robinson played during her son-in-lawโs eight years in office.

โWith a healthy nudge, she agreed to move to the White House with Michelle and Barack. We needed her. The girls needed her. And she ended up being our rock through it all,โ the statement read.
โShe relished her role as a grandmother to Malia and Sasha โ just as she doted on Avery, Leslie, Austin, and Aaron. Less encumbered by the responsibilities of motherhood, sheโd indulge in a little more fun and games while keeping any danger of spoiling her grandchildren safely at bay.โ
The statement continued, โAnd although she enforced whatever household rules weโd set for bedtime, watching TV, or eating candy, she made clear that she sided with her โgrandbabiesโ in thinking that their parents were too darn strict.โ
According to the family, Robinson โpassed away peacefullyโ the morning of May 31; agreeing โnone of us are quite sure how exactly weโll move on without her.โ
