For most parents, having a child usually follows a more traditional route where the biological mother becomes pregnant and gives birth; however, this isn’t always the case. Adoption is another common path, but some parents who desire a biological connection prefer using a surrogate to carry the child instead of the mother.
There are various reasons for choosing surrogacy, such as health concerns, but sometimes, opting for a surrogate can spark controversy. A recent example is from Spain, where a renowned 68-year-old actress, Ana Obregón, opted to welcome a baby girl via a surrogate.
Obregón’s decision drew significant attention because surrogacy is illegal in Spain. She had to travel to the United States to achieve this, where a surrogate carried her baby girl, who was born in a Miami hospital.
However, the story doesn’t end there. What’s even more intriguing is the identity of the baby’s father.
Obregón had a son from an earlier time in her life, but tragically, he passed away in 2020 due to cancer at the age of 27. According to Obregón, her son’s dying wish was to “bring a child of his own into this world.” Hoping to honor his wishes, she facilitated this by using his sperm to conceive her new baby girl. This means Obregón’s baby girl is biologically her granddaughter, and her late son is the baby’s father. It is indeed a lot to take in. Watch the video below for a closer look at this remarkable story.
Are you surprised that surrogacy is illegal in countries like Spain? Should surrogacy be prohibited? Do you feel Obregón fulfilled her son’s wishes out of love, or was it an unusual choice?
