When we look back on our younger days, many of us recall fond memories of being part of the scouts. Remember the times when there were distinct groups for Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts? Well, times are evolving, and so is the organization at its core.
After being known as The Boy Scouts of America for over a hundred years, a rebranding is happening. The organization is now moving forward with the new name, Scouting America. While this might seem like a huge shift from tradition, it’s a change they feel is truly necessary.
In recent years, The Boy Scouts have been making efforts to include both boys and girls, as well as gay youths. This, paired with financial challenges, allegations of abuse, and a drop in membership, has pushed them to act. The president and CEO, Roger Krone, expressed a heartfelt wish for all American youth to feel welcome in their programs for the next century.
The organization is hopeful that this rebranding will set the stage for growth and appeal to a new generation of scouts, all while staying true to their core values. If everything goes smoothly, come February 8, 2025, on their 115th birthday, the transformation to Scouting America will be complete.
Since welcoming gay youth in 2013 and opening up to girls recently, The Boy Scouts have seen more than 6,000 girls achieve the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. It’s a testament to the positive effects of being inclusive.
Though the name change has sparked some criticism, including from Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, The Boy Scouts believe it is a crucial step. They are committed to navigating these turbulent times and continuing to offer enriching experiences for all scouts.
