9 Devices to Unplug for Lower Energy Bills

Electricity bills can sometimes surprise us with unexpectedly high numbers, often due to gadgets we aren’t mindful of. Many of them continue to consume power even when they appear to be off. By unplugging these devices, we can make a noticeable dent in our energy consumption and, consequently, our bills.

It might surprise you to learn—or perhaps you just need a reminder—that certain appliances quietly draw energy even when switched off or in standby. On average, this can rack up to about 1.6 kilowatts per day, accounting for roughly 5% to 10% of a household’s energy usage.

1. Cable Boxes

Devices that provide your home with cable or satellite television, especially those equipped with a “video recorder” function, are quietly greedy when it comes to electricity. Unplugging them when not in use can help reduce your consumption.

2. Laptops

Laptops left plugged in can consume as much as 8.9 watts each hour. If left in standby or hibernation mode, this could rise to 15.7 watts. So, it’s a good idea to unplug them when not being used.

3. Music Devices

Music devices, particularly those with a radio function that remain on, can use up to 14.4 watts, silently adding to your energy bill.

4. Desktop Computers

Leaving a desktop computer in sleep mode increases consumption to 21.1 watts. If the computer is on but the monitor is off, it can still consume a hefty 73.9 watts. It’s wise to turn them off completely or unplug them when not in use.

5. Coffee Machines & Game Consoles

Coffee machines, when simply plugged and not in use, still draw a little over 1 watt per hour. Meanwhile, game consoles can use about 1 watt when off and up to 23.3 watts when in “ready to use” mode.

6. Televisions

Modern LCD screens might be more efficient, yet certain models can consume twice the energy of older types, making it prudent to unplug or use a power strip with a switch.

7. Microwave Ovens

A microwave with the door open can increase its power draw by up to eight times, using up to 25.79 watts compared to a standard 3.08 watts. Closing the door and unplugging when not in use can make a difference.

8. Cordless Telephones

A phone with an active answering machine can use as much as 2.9 watts per hour. Unplugging it when you’re out or asleep can contribute to savings.

9. Mobile Phone Chargers

Though the least consuming, it is unnecessary to leave chargers plugged in when they’re not in use, as they draw power regardless of whether a phone is attached or not.

As a simple routine, walk through your home before bedtime to unplug unneeded devices. A little effort can lead to less burden on your wallets and a more energy-sustainable household.
