In a heartfelt interview on Hoda Kotb’s Making Space podcast, Keith Morrison opened up about the special relationship between his stepson, Matthew Perry, and his mother, Suzanne. Reflecting on Perry’s sudden passing at the age of 54, Morrison shared the lasting impact it has had on their family.

“It’s with you all the time,” Morrison said, describing the weight of Perry’s death. The pain constantly lingers, and new waves of grief come unexpectedly. It’s not an easy burden to carry.

Morrison revealed that Suzanne is finding it particularly difficult to cope with the loss of her son. Towards the end of Perry’s life, their bond had grown stronger than ever before. They were in constant communication, sharing things that most “middle-aged men” don’t typically talk about with their mothers.

On October 28, 2023, Matthew Perry was discovered deceased in his Los Angeles-area home. The cause of death was determined to be the acute effects of ketamine, as confirmed by the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office.

According to Morrison, Perry was the happiest he had ever been in his final days. “He was happy, and he said so,” Morrison recalled. This brings some comfort, but it’s also unfair that Perry didn’t get to experience his third act in life. As he once mused, “If I suddenly died, people would be shocked, but not too many people would be surprised.”

When asked if Perry’s passing caught him off guard, Morrison admitted to a mixture of emotions. It was the devastating news no one wants to receive, but deep down, there was a realization that it might happen someday.

Throughout Perry’s career, Morrison offered his unwavering support through the highs and lows. Perry recognized when he needed help and willingly sought treatment. However, as he shared, the struggles persisted, and it became an immense battle to bear. It was a tough and overpowering challenge.

The bond between Matthew Perry and his mother, Suzanne, was a testament to their love and connection. Keith Morrison’s words shed light on the complex emotions surrounding Perry’s untimely death. The pain may never fully go away, but the memories of their close relationship will forever be cherished.
