A teenage victim refuses to let tragedy define her
In a devastating incident that occurred during a volleyball tournament, 17-year-old Janae Edmondson had her life forever changed when a driver crashed into her, severing both of her legs. The driver, Daniel Riley, was found guilty of multiple charges, including second-degree assault and driving without a valid license. A jury has recommended an 18-year and nine-month prison sentence for Riley, with the final sentencing scheduled for April 18.
Prior to the accident, Riley was out on bond, despite having violated the conditions of his release more than 40 times. The collision occurred when Riley ran through a yield sign at an intersection in St. Louis, Missouri. Edmondson, who had traveled from Tennessee for the tournament, was struck by Riley’s vehicle as she was walking with her family to their hotel.
Her father, a veteran, sprang into action to save her life. Using his belt as a tourniquet, he provided immediate aid until medical help arrived. Edmondson was then rushed to a nearby hospital, where she underwent 29 surgeries to treat her injuries, including a fractured pelvis and internal damage. She has already endured 23 surgeries just two weeks after the accident and is expected to have more in the future.
Despite the immense challenges she has faced, Edmondson remains resilient. In her victim impact statement, she expressed gratitude for her parents’ life-saving actions and vowed not to let this tragedy define her. “While this tragedy has severely impacted my life, I will not let it define who I am and what I bring to this world,” she asserted.
Along with seeking justice through Riley’s conviction, the Edmondson family is also pursuing legal action against both Riley and the city of St. Louis. It was revealed that Riley had violated his bond multiple times, yet remained free, prompting efforts to remove the city’s Circuit Attorney from her position. The attorney, Kim Gardner, initially resisted the efforts but ultimately resigned three months later.
