McDonald’s, one of the world’s most beloved fast-food chains, made a bold statement in 2018 to honor women on International Women’s Day. To remind all women that they are wonderful in their own unique way, the iconic golden arches were turned upside down. This unexpected move was not only visually striking but also a powerful symbol of celebration.

Some people were taken aback when they first noticed the inverted arches. They wondered if it had something to do with a rivalry between McDonald’s and Wendy’s, but they couldn’t have been more wrong. To make the celebration more visible, McDonald’s flipped the sign at their Lynwood, CA location. Additionally, their social media accounts featured the original logo, while McDonald’s employees proudly wore hats and shirts adorned with a special “W”-like emblem. In 100 locations around the country, customers even received their orders in packaging decorated with the inverted arches.

Wendy Lewis, McDonald’s Chief Diversity Officer, explained the significance of this historic event: “For the first time in our brand’s history, we flipped our iconic arches for International Women’s Day to honor the extraordinary accomplishments of women everywhere, especially in our restaurants.”

Lauren Altman, a representative from McDonald’s, highlighted that the new design was created as a tribute to women everywhere. She emphasized the company’s commitment to empowering women by providing them with opportunities to grow and excel in the workplace. In fact, in the United States, six out of ten restaurant managers are women, showcasing McDonald’s dedication to diversity and equality.

McDonald’s decision to revamp its logo for International Women’s Day is part of a larger trend among companies to honor women and promote gender equality. Another notable example is Johnnie Walker, who released a special edition ‘Jane Walker’ bottle and donated $1 from each bottle sold to organizations working towards enhancing women’s status.

Stephanie Jacoby, Vice President of Johnnie Walker, explained the motivation behind their initiative: “Important gender conversations remain at the forefront of culture, and we believe there is no better time than now to debut our Jane Walker emblem and support forward-thinking groups that share our goal. We are proud to toast the many accomplishments of women and everyone on the path to gender equality.”

Brawny, a well-known brand, also joined the cause by temporarily replacing their iconic Brawny Man with a woman. In addition, they donated $100,000 to Girls, Inc., an organization dedicated to empowering young girls.

These initiatives by McDonald’s, Johnnie Walker, and Brawny are just a few examples of how corporations are using their platforms to honor women and raise awareness about the importance of gender equality.
