At first glance, Jessica Van Wagenen and her daughter, Keelin, were often mistaken for sisters. Jessica fondly recalls the moment, saying, “They initially thought we were sisters, and I had to clarify that I was the mother and we were working together.” This dynamic duo proves that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams and create a strong bond through shared experiences.
Jessica Van Wagenen, a former marine who is now retired, made the selfless decision to postpone her dreams in order to raise her daughters. Explaining her choice, she shared, “We were always on the move, and their dad was in and out of the picture, so I always believed that the children needed stability.” Putting her children’s needs first, Jessica decided to forgo attending college and prioritize stability for her family.
Keelin Van Wagenen, Jessica’s daughter, couldn’t be prouder of her mother for refusing to give up on her ambitions. “I tell her every day that I’m proud of her, and she continued to do what she wanted to do,” Keelin gushed. The bond between this extraordinary mother and daughter is truly inspiring.
Both Jessica and Keelin have now embarked on their nursing careers. Keelin works as a pediatric nurse at ECU Health, while Jessica fulfills her calling as an operating room nurse for Carteret Healthcare. Each day, they carry the memories of their shared nursing school journey, cherishing the unique experience they had together.
Reflecting on their experience, both Jessica and Keelin express their joy in being able to share their nursing school journey. “It’s a lot of fun. Being able to share that with my daughter is incredibly special,” Jessica shared with a heartfelt chuckle. Keelin echoed her sentiments, saying, “It feels refreshing. I went with my mom while others traveled with their siblings or significant others.” Their bond of kinship and shared purpose has woven a tapestry of love and achievement, forever binding this mother and daughter.
