Although her daughter’s harrowing story took place in 2016, it is a powerful reminder for all parents to remain vigilant and aware.
According to a BuzzFeed report, Jackie decided that 2016 would be the year her 13-year-old daughter, Gabbie, would get her own cellphone. It was a gift for Christmas, an LG d500. Jackie explained that one of the reasons for giving Gabbie a phone was to be able to keep in touch with her due to her busy practice schedule. Little did they know, their lives were about to take a terrifying turn.
One day, while Gabbie was in her room using her cellphone, her mother heard her scream. Panicked, Jackie rushed to her daughter’s side, only to find her in excruciating pain. Gabbie was gripping her neck, screaming hysterically. As a mother, it was a heart-wrenching sight for Jackie. She felt helpless, not knowing how to ease her daughter’s pain. It took Gabbie several minutes before she could even explain what had happened.
Gabbie told her mom that she had been using her phone while it was charging. To her horror, she received an electric shock. The current traveled up the charging cable, through her phone, and eventually burnt her neck as it came into contact with her metal necklace. The burns were so severe that Gabbie suffered painful second-degree burns, resulting in a scar around her neck.
Devastated by this shocking incident, Jackie felt compelled to share her daughter’s story and raise awareness among other parents about the hidden dangers of cellphones. It is something that is rarely discussed or even known. As Jackie emphasized, “With so many kids using phones nowadays, parents need to be warned about the harm that they can cause.”
