If you find these scary-looking insects in your home, here's what it means

We all encounter bugs in our homes at some point, but there are certain creepy crawlies that most of us can live without. If you live in a rural area, you’re probably familiar with flies, ants, spiders, and other insects attempting to invade your home during the summer months and beyond. While some people aren’t bothered by these bug visitors, others find them less than welcome. Personally, I don’t mind spiders building their webs in the corners, and the occasional fly doesn’t bother me. However, there’s one insect that I take exception to: earwigs…

Earwigs may be small, but they are far from cute. Although they may look like they pack a nasty sting or bite, they are actually harmless. Despite their harmless nature, most people don’t want a horde of earwigs crawling around their homes. That’s why I found a particular hack for dealing with them incredibly useful.A shallow bowl filled with olive oil

According to Facebook user Alicia Alexander, filling a shallow bowl with half a cup of olive oil and placing it in your backyard or on your deck is a perfect way to trap earwigs. The sweet aroma of olive oil attracts earwigs, and once they climb into the bowl, they are unable to climb back out. Alicia claims that in less than 24 hours, the bowl managed to accumulate quite a number of earwigs. Take a look at the picture below:A shallow bowl filled with trapped earwigs (after less than 24 hours)

And after 36 hours, the same bowl got even fuller…A shallow bowl filled with trapped earwigs (after 36 hours)

Earwigs are attracted to the sweetness of the olive oil, and this hack can help you effectively address an earwig infestation in your home!

Now, we don’t want to alarm you, but if you find an unusual number of earwigs in your home, it could indicate problems with rotting wood. Earwigs are among the many insects that are attracted to decaying wood, so it’s worth checking any wooden structures you have at home.

However, if earwigs are seeking warmer conditions inside your house, it’s nothing to be alarmed about. It’s completely normal, and their presence is highly unlikely to affect you in any way.
