"Britain's most unwanted dog" searching for a home after 5 years in the shelter

Every shelter dog dreams of finding a loving home, but some have to wait longer than others. Meet Mason, an eight-year-old German Shepherd mix, who has spent an incredible five years at Hilbrae Rescue Kennels in Shropshire, England. This resilient pup has been through a lot, and now he’s hoping to finally find his forever home.

Mason’s journey began when he was found as a stray in 2019. Chained up and abandoned without food or water, his early life remains a mystery. Despite his challenging start, Mason has made incredible progress. With the help of a dedicated trainer, he has overcome behavioral issues that once hindered his chances of being adopted.

Although Mason has been rehomed twice before, these situations didn’t work out. But the shelter’s staff is positive about his potential. Mason can now walk without a muzzle and has shown tremendous improvement in his behavior. He’s a big-hearted dog who is eager to please and deserves a chance at a loving home.

Hilbrae Rescue Kennels has been tirelessly searching for the perfect forever home for Mason. They believe he would thrive in a quiet, adults-only household with no other pets. However, despite their efforts, they have not been able to find the right match. As a result, Mason has spent the majority of his life in the shelter, earning him the title of “Britain’s most unwanted dog.”

It’s disheartening that bigger dogs like Mason often face longer wait times for adoption compared to their smaller counterparts. Marty Burrell, who runs the kennels, explains, “We find bigger dogs do get overlooked more but not to this extent.” Smaller dogs can find new homes within a week, leaving us to wonder why Mason has been left behind for so long.

But don’t lose hope! Shelter staff firmly believe that there is a perfect home out there for Mason. Despite his size, he is incredibly affectionate once he learns to trust someone. Mason just needs a chance to show his loving nature and be seen for the wonderful dog he truly is.

No dog should have to spend their entire life waiting in a shelter. We hope that Mason, this “most unwanted dog,” will soon find his forever home. If you are in the area and interested in adopting Mason, please contact Hilbrae Rescue Kennels for more information. And if you can’t adopt him yourself, please share his story to spread the word and increase his chances of finding a loving home. Let’s help Mason’s dreams come true!
