Dogs have always been known for their kind and friendly nature. They are often considered as four-legged angels who are always ready to lend a helping paw, not just to humans, but also to other creatures in need. Take Wally, for example, a lovable Golden Retriever who recently proved that dogs truly are heroes.
Wally’s favorite pastime is swimming, and he was enjoying his time in the beautiful Hickory Hills Lake in Lunenburg when he came across a helpless woodchuck. Without a second thought, Wally swam out to the center of the lake to save the woodchuck, much to the astonishment of his owner, Lauren Russell.
“He was approximately 100 meters out when a woodchuck crept straight up on his back, and he swam back to the shore with him,” Russell recounted. “We were astounded. It was incredible. We couldn’t believe what we saw.”
Nobody knows how the woodchuck ended up in the lake, but thanks to Wally’s quick thinking and bravery, the little creature had a chance to survive. What’s even more remarkable is that Wally didn’t seem bothered at all by his unusual passenger.
“He didn’t even care,” Russell exclaimed. “He took a look behind him and then just started swimming.”
What ensued between Wally and the woodchuck was a beautiful moment of inter-species connection. Despite their differences, these two animals found a way to communicate and understand each other.
“When the two creatures returned to shore, it appeared as if they exchanged words,” Russell shared. “Even though the woodchuck couldn’t say thank you, there was still some kind of communication between the two. They kind of touched snouts, and he raced away.”
Wally’s act of heroism didn’t go unnoticed. A video capturing his compassionate deed quickly went viral, capturing the hearts of viewers around the world. Many were moved to leave their own comments, expressing their awe and admiration for Wally’s incredible rescue.
“He looks exactly like my golden boy, LJ! You can never go wrong with a Golden Retriever. They certainly are the greatest breed of dog!” wrote one viewer, highlighting the lovable nature of Golden Retrievers.
“How adorable! If a woodchuck could ride, how many would he be able to ride?” another person playfully exclaimed.
