A Heartwarming Act of Kindness Turns Into a Devastating Journey
Vinny Desautels, a brave second-grader from Roseville, California, embarked on a beautiful journey two years ago. Inspired by his mother, stylist Amanda Azevedo, Vinny decided to grow out his hair to support cancer patients in need. Despite facing taunts and being misidentified as a girl, Vinny remained strong and unwavering, according to his father, Jason Desautels.
After donating an incredible 13 inches of hair to Wigs for Kids, Vinny started experiencing a stinging sensation in his eye. At first, his parents didn’t think much of it, attributing it to the allergy season. However, as time went on, Vinny’s eye worsened, and additional symptoms started to appear.
An Unexpected Turn of Events Sparks Concern
During a typical day at school, Vinny returned home with a hurting knee, leaving his parents worried. To their dismay, they noticed swelling in his right hip. Fearing the worst, they rushed him to the emergency room, where an X-ray confirmed their greatest fears: Vinny had a tumor in his pelvic bone.
Further tests revealed that the tumor was also responsible for Vinny’s eye swelling. It was then that Vinny received the devastating diagnosis of stage 4 cancer, most likely Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer that affects bone and soft tissue.
A Family’s Unyielding Determination in the Face of Adversity
As Vinny prepares to start chemotherapy this week, his family has come together to support him both emotionally and financially. To help cover the growing costs of his treatment, they have set up a GoFundMe campaign. The response from the community has been overwhelming, with donations reaching nearly $457,000. It is a testament to the incredible impact Vinny’s selflessness has had on others.
Despite the challenges ahead, Vinny remains optimistic. His father lovingly shares, “As long as we’re there with a grin, telling him he’ll be fine, Vinny has the same mentality. He is an everlasting optimist, just like us.”
