Losing hair is a difficult part of battling cancer, but one mother from Arizona found comfort and support in her son’s selfless act. Melanie Shaha, a resident of Gilbert, lost her hair due to a benign brain tumor in 2003. In a heartwarming gesture, her son, Matt, decided to grow out his hair with the goal of creating a wig for his mother.

Melanie’s journey began with dull headaches, which turned out to be caused by a pituitary brain tumor. The impact of the tumor on the pituitary gland affected hormone regulation and led to hair loss. After undergoing several surgeries and radiotherapy, Melanie was devastated to find that she was losing her hair despite being told it wouldn’t happen.

Losing her hair made Melanie feel self-conscious, and she longed to blend in rather than stand out as someone battling cancer. It was during a family lunch in 2018 that Matt made a lighthearted suggestion: “Why don’t I grow out my hair so I can create you a wig?” After graduating from university with hair length restrictions, Matt had been enjoying the freedom of growing his hair out, and the idea clicked.

Despite her initial hesitation, Melanie couldn’t help but admire her son’s commitment. Matt’s hair steadily grew, and by March 2021, he had twelve inches of hair ready to be made into a wig. With the help of a few coworkers, they organized a hair-chopping event at Melanie’s house.

Both mother and son were overwhelmed with emotions as the hair was cut. What started as a joke turned into a powerful symbol of love and support. The donated hair was sent to Compassionate Creations in California, where a hand-tied wig was carefully crafted.

Receiving the wig was a joyful moment for Melanie. She marveled at the stunning color and professional styling. According to Matt, it looked excellent on her. The family’s experience touched the heart of Veronica Balch, co-founder of Compassionate Creations, who was deeply moved by Matt’s selfless act.

Melanie admits that it will be difficult to top Matt’s incredible gift. The wig symbolizes more than just a replacement for lost hair; it represents love, support, and the strength of their bond as mother and son. This act of selflessness has filled Melanie’s cup of emotions, reminding her that she is not alone in her battle against cancer.
