It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing the role of Prince Charming to Julia Roberts’ damsel in distress in the classic romance comedy, Pretty Woman. But did you know that Richard Gere initially turned down the role? It was Roberts who convinced him otherwise with just three words.

In an unexpected turn of events, Charles Grodin was actually considered for the role of Edward, the wealthy businessman in the movie. However, it was Roberts who believed that Gere was the perfect fit for the character. And boy, was she right!

The original script for the movie was much darker and had a gloomy storyline. It depicted the life of a drug-addicted prostitute who is eventually abandoned by Edward. But thanks to the visionary director Garry Marshall and Disney’s involvement, the movie transformed into the fairy tale we all know and love.

Even though Gere initially didn’t see the appeal of the movie and declined the offer multiple times, Marshall believed in the chemistry between Roberts and Gere. And he was absolutely right. Their on-screen chemistry was palpable and made audiences root for them to have their “happily ever after.”

Interestingly, Gere recalls being completely captivated by Roberts when they first met, and Marshall orchestrating their meeting in hopes of sparking a connection. Gere couldn’t even remember Marshall being present because he was so mesmerized by Roberts. It was during this meeting that Roberts wrote a simple message on a piece of paper and passed it to Gere, urging him to say yes. And he did, without hesitation.

Pretty Woman remains a timeless masterpiece, thanks to the flawless performances of Roberts and Gere. Their chemistry is undeniable, and the movie wouldn’t be the same without them. The iconic scene where Gere climbs the fire escape to rescue Roberts’ character is etched in our memories forever.
