Cooper, an American foxhound, is unlike any other dog you’ve ever seen. He possesses a rare condition known as short spine syndrome. This genetic anomaly causes severe compression and fusion of the vertebrae, making Cooper truly one of a kind.

Short spine syndrome is often a result of inbreeding, which makes Cooper’s story all the more remarkable. In 2017, this resilient pup was discovered abandoned near Halifax, Virginia. Thankfully, animal control found him and brought him to Secondhand Hounds, a shelter in Minnesota.

A Warm Foster Home

Elly and Andy Keegan selflessly opened their hearts and home to foster Cooper. Despite his mobility challenges, the Keegans diligently worked to improve his quality of life. Cooper’s strength and determination were truly awe-inspiring.

But Cooper’s journey was not without obstacles. Soon after arriving at the Keegan’s house, he accidentally fell, fracturing his neck in multiple places. This setback, however, did not dampen Cooper’s spirits. Even a bone infection a few months later couldn’t hold him back.

“He also had a surgery which helps him go to the bathroom a little better, which means he’s quite low maintenance now and can go by himself,” Elly shared with Fox News. Cooper’s resilience and adaptability were nothing short of extraordinary.

Finding His Forever Home

After six months of caring for Cooper, the Keegans made the difficult decision to put him up for adoption. Elly was certain that this “happiest dog” would attract numerous applicants. However, much to their surprise, nobody came forward to give Cooper a forever home.

“I think I broke down every other hour,” Elly confessed to The Dodo. “I was like, ‘Andy, I don’t know what we’re going to do!’ I couldn’t imagine just handing him over and saying, ‘Ok, now be Cooper’s family.’”

Ultimately, the Keegans knew what they had to do – they decided to adopt Cooper themselves. They couldn’t bear to see this incredible dog go without the love and care he deserved.

Thriving Against All Odds

Cooper’s journey hasn’t been easy, but he continues to live life to the fullest. Although he faces some ongoing challenges, Cooper’s indomitable spirit shines through every day, inspiring his new forever home.

“With our other rescues, there was no getting-to-know you period,” Elly said. “It was a family from the beginning.” Cooper effortlessly became an integral part of their lives, bringing immeasurable joy and love.

A Beacon of Hope

The sad reality is that many dogs with conditions like Cooper’s are often euthanized. This heartbreaking fact weighs heavily on Elly’s heart. “They have so much living to do, and Cooper is a real example of that,” she lamented to Fox News. Cooper’s story is a testament to the boundless potential that lies within every living creature.
