It truly breaks our hearts to see how some people choose to abandon their loyal companions for the most trivial of reasons. Minor health issues or simply being considered “too old” have led heartless owners to surrender their dogs or even try to have them put to sleep.

One such heartbreaking case involved a dog named Marcus, whose owner wanted to put him down simply because he barked too much. Thankfully, this sweet dog has been given a second chance at life.

Meet Marcus, a 2-year-old patterdale terrier-lab mix, who is now under the loving care of Lucie’s Animal Rescue, a UK-based nonprofit organization. He was surrendered by his owner after just five weeks because he had the habit of barking at other dogs and people.

However, it was evident that Marcus’s owner had shown no effort to understand or correct his behavior. In fact, she had even attempted to have him euthanized at the vet, claiming that she couldn’t be bothered to invest time or training into him.

“Barking is how dogs communicate and express their fears and excitement,” expressed Lucie’s Animal Rescue in a heartfelt Facebook post. When Marcus’s owner was asked about the training she had done to help him overcome his possible nervous behavior, her response was simply, “he’s had none.”

Despite the offer of assistance from a behaviorist, the owner Obstained and still chose to opt for euthanasia, purely due to his barking habit. Founder of the rescue, Lucie Holmes, expressed her outrage and heartache, stating, “It’s disgusting. I have not been able to sleep much because I am still so angry. Dogs bark. It’s what they do.”

Fortunately, Marcus was spared from such a tragic fate and was taken in by the compassionate rescue organization. His new caretakers describe him as a sweet and gentle dog who has not even barked once since his arrival. “You are safe Marcus, and loved. You will never be treated so badly again, and that I can promise,” assured the rescue.

The rescue organization happily reported that Marcus has been socializing and making friends with other dogs. Despite his past owner’s issues, Marcus now only barks in a playful and non-aggressive manner. “I presume he’s been barking at other dogs because he wants to say hello and communicate with them… Like all dogs do,” the rescue affectionately wrote. “He is very nervous and anxious, but it’s wonderful to see him finally enjoying the company of friends and, most importantly, being a dog!”

Since his arrival at the rescue, Marcus has been receiving training and has shown excellent responsiveness and obedience to commands. While it’s unclear when he will be available for adoption, he is settling in well and flourishing within the rescue environment.

Lucie emphasizes that Marcus’s story serves as a reminder to all dog owners that having a pet is a lifelong commitment that requires patience. “You have to do your research and give dogs time to settle,” she advised. “You wouldn’t take a toddler to nursery and expect them to be blissfully happy immediately.”

It’s truly heart-wrenching that Marcus was surrendered simply for barking too much. However, we are overjoyed that he is now in the hands of those who truly care for his well-being.

If you’re an animal lover, please share Marcus’s inspiring story and help spread the message of compassion and understanding towards our furry friends. Let’s give them the love and care they deserve.
