Optical illusions are some of the most intriguing images out there. They challenge our perception and often leave us scratching our heads, or in some cases, staring intently at a picture in hopes of seeing something more.

I was little when I first saw this image. My childlike curiosity was piqued, but it wasn’t until years later that I realized the true genius behind it. Now, this optical illusion is online and has been seen by millions, and for a good reason—it’s a tough nut to crack. This particular illusion shows two images at the same time, but very few people can actually discern both.

Millions of people grapple with these puzzling images, often left baffled, wondering exactly what they’re supposed to see.

The famous picture below has circulated around the world since 1888. To put things in perspective—that was the year the first phone line between Stockholm and Gothenburg was built. Yes, folks, the first wax drinking straw was patented in 1888, too! It was a simpler time, but certainly not void of clever mind games.

This postcard below was produced in Germany for an organization called “The Anchor Buggy Company.” Quite the name, don’t you think?

Initially, these postcards were distributed without any hint of the hidden images. But soon enough, eagle-eyed folks began to notice something rather peculiar about this seemingly ordinary postcard…

Take a deep breath and focus—can you see the double pictures in the portrait above?

The mastermind behind this clever illustration was a British cartoonist named W.E. Hill. He had a knack for creativity and a touch of mischief. Hill knew exactly what he was doing but assumed the public would never notice, as explained by All Cute All The Time.

Months passed without much fuss, and Hill continued his career as a cartoonist. But whispers and rumors about this unique image soon began to spread. He quickly amassed thousands of fans enamored by his cleverness.

Hill dubbed this optical illusion “Young-Girl Old-Woman.” True to its name, the portrait depicts a younger girl looking away and an older woman looking down. Tricky, right?

Despite the arrival of newer, and arguably fancier illusions, Hill’s creation has stood the test of time. The “Young-Girl Old-Woman” illusion has enchanted millions, possibly even billions, by now!

Take another look at the image above and really zero in—are you able to spot the double image?

As mentioned earlier, you should be seeing a young woman gazing away and an older lady looking down, appearing somewhat melancholic.
