As we grow older, we realize that the world is filled with incredible stories of compassion and connection between humans and animals. Today, we bring you a heartwarming tale of Ndakasi, an orphaned gorilla, whose final moments were spent in the loving embrace of the man who saved her as a baby.

Found as an Orphan

In the lush Virunga National Park, located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a dedicated team of park rangers tirelessly protects the endangered mountain gorillas from illegal poaching. It was during one of their patrols in April 2007 that they stumbled upon a heart-wrenching scene.

A two-month-old baby gorilla, clinging to her lifeless mother, her innocence shattered by the brutality of an armed militia. In that moment, hope seemed lost, but these compassionate park rangers refused to give up. They knew they had to act.

Andre Bauma, one of the park rangers, formed an instant connection with the orphaned gorilla. Throughout the night, he cradled the tiny creature against his warm chest, offering her the comfort and love she so desperately needed. Thus began a lifelong bond that would touch the hearts of people around the world.

Viral Selfie: A Moment of Joy

In 2019, the world got a glimpse of the extraordinary relationship between Ndakasi and her caretakers when a captivating photo went viral. In this snapshot, Ndakasi and her fellow orphan, Ndeze, strike a pose alongside Mathieu Shamavu, a dedicated caretaker and friend.

The image defied belief, as the gorillas stood upright, seemingly at ease, as they took part in a fun “selfie.” It was a powerful testament to the trust and affection that had blossomed between these incredible creatures and the humans who nurtured them.

“This shot captures their true personalities!” exclaimed the park. The world marveled at the mischievous and cheeky spirits of these gorillas, and their ability to connect with their caretakers.

A Bittersweet Goodbye

Sadly, in September 26, Ndakasi succumbed to a prolonged illness. Her passing left a void in the hearts of all who knew her. But in the midst of sorrow, there was solace in knowing that she was not alone in her final moments.

In a bittersweet and heartbreaking photo, Ndakasi could be seen cradled in the arms of Andre Bauma, the ranger who had held her as a fragile orphan. With tears in his eyes, Andre bid farewell to his beloved friend, whose sweet nature and intelligence had forever touched his life.

Reflecting on their connection, Andre shared, “Ndakasi’s cheerful personality brought a smile to my face every time I interacted with her. I loved her like a child, and it was a privilege to support and care for such a loving creature. Her journey taught me the profound bond between humans and Great Apes, and why we must protect them.”

The touching photograph also reminded the world of the tremendous love and commitment that goes into the care of these incredible animals. The park fondly recalled how Ndakasi’s viral selfie had spread a positive message about the gorillas and their caregivers, forging a connection between people and these majestic creatures.

Rest in peace, Ndakasi. Your journey has shown us the beauty and resilience of the human-animal bond. Your memory will forever inspire us to protect and cherish the amazing creatures that share our world.
