In Pembroke, Ontario, some parking spots now feature a distinctive handshake symbol.

These designated areas, located outside the Pembroke OPP station at 77 International Dr., are established as community safety zones for online transactions.

When you buy or sell something online and need to meet in person, these spots provide a safe space for the exchange, as explained by the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP.

According to an OPP news release, “Project Safe Trade aims to establish a ‘community safety zone’ at an OPP detachment parking lot to facilitate online property transactions.” The project’s goal is to relocate online transactions from private parking lots, homes, and other secluded areas to these public safety zones.

No appointment is necessary; the secure trading locations are open around the clock.

“With the holiday season approaching, this is the perfect time to introduce Project Safe Trade locally,” said Steph Neufeld, commander of the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP detachment. “Online property transactions are increasing, and the UOV OPP is pleased to initiate a community safety program aimed at reducing offences related to online marketplace transactions.” Neufeld added, “Project Safe Trade and similar initiatives can help reduce crime and victimization in our communities.”

Constable Mike Mahon mentioned to CTV News that these zones also help prevent people from becoming victims of fraud.

“If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is,” he warned. “If you ask someone to meet here and they seem reluctant, that’s a red flag.”

The OPP clarified that officers will not act as witnesses, mediators, or document providers for transactions. However, if an issue escalates into a criminal matter, they will respond accordingly.

Technology analyst Carmi Levy advises that during the busy holiday season, it’s crucial to take a moment and do your homework.

“Research the person you’re buying from or selling to. Look into their past transactions and see what other buyers say about them,” Levy recommended.

“Before handing over any money, insist on seeing the item in person. Make sure it powers on and check that it works as expected.”
