College Singers Elevate Josh Groban’s Hit to New Heights with Acapella Mastery

An expertly performed acapella song can bring new depth to any track – whether it’s the absence of instruments highlighting the lyrics or the vocalists’ skill in engaging the audience. This rings especially true for the acapella rendition of Josh Groban’s 2003 hit, “You Raise Me Up,” by Brigham Young University’s (BYU) Vocal Point. Their version breathes fresh life into this inspirational song.

In 1991, a couple of musically passionate BYU students, Dave Boyce and Bob Ahlander, took a bold step and formed the nine-member acapella group we now know as BYU Vocal Point. They quickly made a name for themselves on campus, with their debut concert selling out completely.

The Journey to Acapella Stardom

Since their beginnings, BYU Vocal Point has earned numerous accolades, including a notable fifth-place finish in the third season of NBC’s ‘The Sing-Off’. Their talents were further recognized when, in December 2018, they announced a record deal with Universal Music Group’s classical label, Decca Gold. Member Jason Bromley shared his amazement: “We’re ordinary college students doing extraordinary things.”

A Visual and Musical Treat

The video for “You Raise Me Up” takes viewers on a scenic journey through mountains and valleys. The song begins with a single, clear voice, soon joined by another, to create a harmonious, rich sound. The singers’ voices are bright and pure, accompanied by exceptional percussive sounds produced vocally.

As the group moves through the serene mountain landscape, their rendition of the song becomes an immersive experience. The picturesque setting adds a tranquil vibe, emphasizing music’s power to transport us to another place.

A Refreshing Take on a Classic

The harmonies of the vocalists blend so seamlessly that it’s hard to distinguish the lead from the rest. Their version of this well-loved song steers clear of mere imitation. Instead, they inject their own unique style, adding a new twist towards the end that elevates the harmonies. The finale features a choir of additional students, creating a deeply moving conclusion.

This remarkable rendition of “You Raise Me Up” by BYU Vocal Point is set to become a favorite. Take a moment to relax and soak in this uplifting and unique performance.
