Little Johnny is a curious 7th grader who loves to ask his teacher loads of questions.

One day, Johnny asked his English teacher a question:

“Why do we ignore certain letters in pronunciation, like the letter H in ‘hour’ and ‘honour’?”

His teacher patiently replied,

“We don’t ignore them; they’re considered silent.” This answer left Johnny even more puzzled.

Later that day, during the lunch break, his teacher handed him her packed lunch and asked Johnny to heat it in the cafeteria.

But Little Johnny ate all the food and brought back the empty container to his teacher.

His teacher was surprised and said,

“What happened? I asked you to go and HEAT my food, and you’re returning an empty container.”

Little Johnny replied,

“Madam, I thought the ‘H’ was silent.”
